Memory’s Landscape

The Curation
R+

Memory, and the act of remembering, is never straightforward. Enacted passively, memory is primitive, natural, and sensorial that verges on abstract and vague recollections. However, as an active act, it is designed and carries an agenda, pursuing a photographic and intentional revisitation.

Memories therefore sit on a spectrum: they manifest as negotiations between the passive and the active. In saying this, what we store or omit, eventually, becomes a complex choreography of imagining, perceiving, selecting, tampering, distorting, maintaining, and mapping—a reconstructed composition of truths and half-truths.

And while memory itself is not a place, it is always situated within one-landscapes. Landscapes are therefore where memories are anchored, a place to land. They give memories a foreground, a background, and everything in between — ranging from scenes of retraced certainty and clarity, to messy and muddled impressions.

How framed landscapes and scenes capture memory is this exhibition's primary exploration. The curation is therefore navigated through a series of prompted queries, questioning how perhaps these portrayals depict how memory is recalled, measured, and reconstructed — all to serve as a guide to reflect on how we reconcile with memories of our very own.
